Four acts.

That's what this was supposed to be. A complete story. Beginning, middle, climax, resolution. Clean. Manageable. The kind of scope that makes sense for one guy and his daughters in a recording booth.

Then I realized two characters were sharing an act. Bumping elbows. Their stories needed room to breathe. So one act became two.

Five acts.

Then something was missing. The player needed a reason to fall in love with this world. Not just understand it. Not just feel the weight of it. Actually love it. Want to stay. So I wrote another one.

Six acts.

That's the number I tell people. Six acts. It's on the Steam page. It's in the marketing docs. It's technically accurate.

It's also kind of a lie.

Here's the thing

The endings aren't endings.

They're not a cutscene. Not a montage set to piano music while text scrolls past. Not five minutes of different dialogue before the credits roll.

Each ending is its own act. A full story that follows your choice across weeks. Months. Years. Into lives you couldn't have predicted when you made the decision.

So the game is seven acts per playthrough.

But I have to build both.

Eight.

Eight acts. For a game I tell people has six. The Steam page still says six. I'm not ready for that conversation yet.

The postcard problem

I've been playing story games my whole life. Love them. And there's a pattern.

You play for hours. You invest. You learn names. You care about people. You make a big choice at the end. The kind that sits in your chest.

And then you get a postcard.

A beautiful postcard. Well-acted, maybe. Good music. But it's a few minutes. Maybe ten. You made this massive decision and the game gives you a summary. "Things got better." "Things got worse." Text on a screen. Roll credits.

I'm not trashing those games. Some of my favorites do exactly this. Endings are expensive and half your players only see one. The math says keep it short.

Why I can't do that

Some games earn it. Life is Strange lets you rewind time the whole game. By the final choice you've already lived both sides. You know what you're giving up. A cutscene works because the game already showed you everything.

Room 337 doesn't work that way. You spend the game getting to know people. Multiple versions of them. You get fragments. Enough to care. Deeply. But not the full picture.

The full picture lives in the endings.

Not before the choice. After it.

You chose without knowing everything. Now you get to see what that means. Who these people become. What breaks. What doesn't.

A cutscene can't carry that.

The part that keeps me up

Every hour I spend building one ending is invisible to half the people who play this game.

That's not how you're supposed to do it. You're supposed to put your best work in the critical path. Maximize what everyone sees. Keep the branches short. Keep the endings tight. That's the smart move.

I know the smart move. I run the numbers in my head constantly. Usually at 3am when I should be sleeping.

Two full acts that no single player will ever see both of on their first playthrough. Two complete stories. Two sets of scenes I need to write, voice, score, and test. Two futures I refuse to summarize.

The math doesn't work.

Why I'm doing it anyway

Because these aren't characters I made up at a desk.

I've talked about this before. These are my daughters. The story is fiction but the people in it are real. We sat together and talked about their perspectives. What they felt. What they'd say. The anger, the guilt, the love that doesn't know how to say itself out loud. We lived it. All of us.

I know who falls apart first. Who holds it together. Who pretends they're fine until they're not. Not because I wrote it. Because I watched it happen.

If someone sits with me through this game... really sits with it, learns these names, hears these voices, goes through the hard parts... they deserve to know what happens after.

Not a summary. Not text on a black screen.

They deserve to see it.

Both endings took more out of me than the first six acts combined. I'll never tell you what happens in either one.

The number

Four acts. Then five. Then six. Then I stopped pretending six was the real number.

Every time I thought I was done, the story said I wasn't. Not scope creep. Not me overdoing it. I know how that sounds coming from me.

The story kept asking for more because the people in it deserved more.

Eight acts. The math doesn't work. I'm building all of them anyway.
